DJ Maquina

sam_springer.jpegDJ Maquina likes to play timba. Cuban timba mostly contains elements of funk, jazz, hip hop and a portion of rock. Timba uses a lot of piano tumbaos, and a good example is Ivan “Melón” Gonzalez. The arrangements are usually advanced and sofisticated, listen for example to Alain Perez’ “La primera noche”.

DJ Maquina’s interest for music started in his childhood, with the radio music in Havana in the 60’s, and led to a frenetic chase of interesting recordings and the first steps as a DJ in the 80’s.

If you want to listen more to DJ Maquina you can visit the clubs El Benny and Cubaneo in Stockholm.

DJ Manana

maria.jpegIf she gets to choose, timba is the thing, and has been so since the beginning of the year 2000. DJ Manana got hooked on both the dance and the music when she happened to visit a salsa course in Gothenburg with some friends. The others quit, she was stuck and since then her interest has just kept growing.

When the salsa association needed Djs, and with their great collection of records to dig into, the temptation was too big to resist. Now she has several years of experience from different clubs in Gothenburg and Stockholm and at the moment she lives in Barcelona.

DJ Sotomayor

jaime6.jpegDJ Sotomayor grew up in Havana and in that time you listened to bimbón, dengue, chaonda, mozambique, funky, guaguancó, soul and breakdance.

After his studies he began his work as a DJ, and the most popular music in the beginning was live recordings on cassettes! The role as a DJ has developed throughout the years and took a new important turn with his moving to Sweden. Of course the thing is the newest timba, but also a lot of well chosen classics.

If you want to listen more to DJ Sotomayor you can visit the clubs El Benny and Cubaneo in Stockholm.

DJ Saúl

saul_dj2.jpegSaúl Pérez Valdés started studying dance, vocals and percussion in Havana in 1986. Parallel to law school he studied for the best teachers from for example Conjunto Folclórico Nacional de Cuba. As an artistic leader and coreographer Saúl worked for a decade all over South America.

Saúl has always shared his knowledge of dancing and folcloristic culture, lately as a leader and dancer for Aché Batá in Stockholm. Saúl regularly keeps courses in Stockholm mainly in Cuban and Afrocuban dance. Read more at www.cumbe.se.

DJ Cucullo

DJ Cucullo plays classics of salsa and son. Cuban music, of course, but the world of salsa is greater than Cuba. Puerto Rico, New York and Colombia are other sources of great tunes. In Cucullo’s playlists you will also find clave-based tunes from Africa and Spain. Artists you will hear are classics like Benny Moré, Arsenio Rodriguez, Felix Chappotín, Fania All-Stars, Hector Lavoe, Orchestra Baobab , La Sonora Carruseles mixed with modern artists like Africando, El Canario and Ricardo Lemvo y Makina Loca
