The association La Clave
Radio Clave is run by the non-profit association La Clave. Our goal is to spread knowledge and joy about music based on the clave rhythm. Radio Clave is financed by our members and we not have any political orientation.
We use the term clave rhythm to describe the rhythm that the instrument clave plays in salsa, son, rumba, cha-cha-cha, bossanova, merengue and many other music styles with african origin that flourish in the latin and african parts of the world.
The music that we play on Radio Clave is chosen by our member DJs. They have different tastes and styles and make their choice of music based on different themes.
A new world of musical nuances
For the untrained ear, in lack of better terms, this music often sounds like “latin music” or “world music”. But for those who have had the opportunity to listen in and learn a bit more, a new explorable world of musical nuances opens up. For those who are new to this world we hope to be a source of knowledge, joy and inspiration.
Especially, we associate the soul in clave-based music with a vigorous and bubbling rhythmic feeling in the whole body. Clave-based music almost always contains many rhythmic instruments that are combined to form a cascade of rhythms. Perhaps the music that we traditionally have listened to in Europe is primarily based on melodies and parts, where primitive rhythm patterns, often based on drums and bass, act as a background. On the other hand, Clave-based music is based the rhythm and if there is a melody, many times it acts as a spice rather than a structure.
